Powerful Pressure: Using an MCC Approach to Create More Efficient Exploration

A key distinction between ACC-PCC-MCC coaches is the length of time it might take them to get to a meaningful, transformative outcome of a session. MCC coaches tend to offer more efficient and transformative sessions, not because of what they contribute to the session, but by using meaningful client language to create effective pressure throughout the session.

In this session we will explore a coaching session together with the lens of an MCC approach. We will study the options each pause in the session offers, and how coaches of any level might better leverage the client's own way of communicating to create more impactful and effective pressure towards the client's desired outcome of the session." Will begin with a brief introduction to the concept of using language to create pressure (roughly 10-15 minutes to get started). Then we will begin an interactive coaching demo. The coaching session will likely be a 30-45 minute session which will be interrupted frequently in order to reflect on the client language present and possible questions one could ask. This is an exercise I regularly offer my Level 3 class participants. Coaches engaged in the process should be able to better identify 4/5 and 5/5 language and question opportunities by the end of the session.

What should a coach consider doing if the structure they are trying to follow for agenda setting, checking in, or wrapping up a session feels like a distraction and/or disconnected from the client? -> Coaches should use 4/5-5/5 language from the session to make the structure sound more naturally like the client's own way of thinking and communicating."
